Any comments about rear discharge vs side discharge for a finish mower? Pros or cons on Land Pride or Woods or King Cutter - good or bad points / experiences?

Land pride does a good job,but most I have seen were a little hard on bearings.Whatever you buy,get the ones with 4 or more wheels, the mower will tend to float independant of the tractor and scalp less.As for rear discharge, the ones I have used seem to windrow the grass on the outside edges of the deck or in the middle, depending on blade rototion.I have a 6' Bevco, used for 8 years so far, poor thing has been through hell.Only things I have done to it is sharpen blades and grease bearings.I'm still using the origional belt, and I mow 6-7 acres weekly.

I have a 6-foot KingKutter finish mower that I use with a 2N. I don't have any trouble unless the grass is getting to be about 8 inches or so -- and you really shouldn't let turf grasses get that high between cuttings.

I mow in 2nd gear. I would prefer an 8N for mowing since I've been told by several people that they mow in 3rd gear with their 8N's.

As for rear discharge? I think it would help in taller grass as the cut grass doesn't have to be transported across the entire mower to reach the discharge chute. It also may help distribute the clippings more evenly (side discharge mowers tend to leave clumps in turns). I can't really say though as I've never tried one.

I have a woods RM660 with a side discharge. I power it by a 55 hp JD 5310. Sometime when I hit very heavy grass it will clog up and smoke the belt if I'm not careful. I think a rear discharge might be better, since it would remove the grass from the mower faster (I think). I like the construction of the machine, I've had it for two seasons. I've had to replace the wheel bushing this year. I usually run through three sets of blades each year.
