I got the mf 12 baler going tonight and baled up some straw (I opened up some bales and threw it in while stationary) The baler seems to be working OK but needs some fine tuning like knives sharpened, I think. It has poly twine in it now ... would sisal work better???? Should it sound like a steamship engine while running. The straw was pretty short to start(4") so it was kind of like baling grass clippings. Should long hay work better? . The guy I got it from says to spread old engine oil on the plunger rails for lubrication. Will this not contaminate the hay????
Any advice would help

get manuals from MF. check bearins and bushings in crankshaft bushing at the rod that connect to the plunger.check bearns under and side of the plunger. look at top of plunger to see if there is a wooden block with shims for taken slack out.you can oil the plunger rails it works for me.these older balers used sisal and it easer on knotters and knives.

Kevin:

I've got two MF 10s, and only been using them a year so I'm not expert. First and best advice I can give is buy the manuals: MF dealer can get them for you (I got the operators and the parts manuals) cheap. They take about a week to come in, I think operators may have been $7, and parts about $15. They tell you everything about setting up and fine tuning, too.

Now: my first one sounded like you describe. It worked ok, I spent a lot of time trying to get the knotters reliable. Finally, a bill hook broke...new part was $80 so I started looking around for a parts baler. Found a neighbor had another MF 10, shed kept, 'gently used' and original owner. Got it for next to nothing...it sounds like a sewing machine: quiet, smooth. So my original baler has/will become the parts baler.

I understand the early MF balers were shipped from the factory for sisal. There was a 'conversion kit' for poly (not sure exactly what was in it), so yours was probably converted if it had poly in it. Somebody else could probably tell you if you can 'go back' to sisal.

good luck,
Tom
