Hi Just wondering what size plow {or bottoms ] my farmall 706 with a 301 engine can handle in clay soil? Thanks ,Bill

It amazes me how the power requirements vary to plow in different parts of the country. 3-16 is what we used to pull with the 656s. They toyed with them in 3rd. They would have pulled 4-14 but we always thought the trans and rearend was a little too light duty for that much plow.

We have a 756 with the D310, and farm in clay with hills. We pull 4-16's, 2 or 3rd low at best. Only one time we pulled in 4th Low. I would recommend the 3-16's, I think you could increase speed a little, and actually plow more in a day.

In our clay it's 4-16s in high first. TA needed now and then going up a steep hill

In ground like that I use a 4-bottom 16 inch plow with my 706

If the ground is fairly level a 4 bottom 14" would do OK. If it is a bit hilly (or you don't like to lug down a lot!) I would go with a 3 bottom 16". Good luck and be safe!
