Another name for a field cultivator. Series of curved tines with replacable teeth usually operated at 4 to 6 inches deep. Here in our country the preferred unit for seedbed work. Also used for fall stubble work and summer fallow. Action and shape of the teeth were supposed to bring weeds to the top of the soil where they would be dried and killed by the sun. Since supplanted mostly by Round-up. Not worth one small hoot in a sod field. 10 feet would be a nice fit for 45 to 50 horse.

Locally they're known as quack diggers or quack lifters. They were used to bring the quack grass roots to the surface so they would dry out and die. Usually we used them a couple times over a field, at about weekly intervals, after first breaking the sod with a disk tiller. Could also be used in soil preparation, like a spring tooth drag.
