My buddy and I just purchased two 2-bottom John Deere drag plows on rubber tires. I know nothing about these plows except that they are probably late 1940s vintage. They are set up to accept cylinders for raising and lowering (but the cylinders did not come with them) Can the plow be used without the cylinder in place?
One plow has a hand lever for adjustment, the other has a crank. Does anyone know where I can get some more info about these plows, or maybe just plows in general? Is there detailed pictures available on the web? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advanve.

Came here to research a 2 bottom JD plow I recently purcahased. I was wondering what model it was, but looking at the picture of the 44 makes me wonder if its that. Except for hydrulic lift it is identical to the picture. Says "14 in Frame on the cross frame, but thats the only numbers I find. I'd like to find the front break- away assembly. This one was gone. Springs and rods are there, but not whatever attaches between it and the drawbar. I have clean ground, so I wasn't real worried about it, but likely paid too much?? ($300). I bought it from a guy who does actions as a hobby/business. I don't mind paying a little extra, since I didn't have to stand around the auction. I also simply do not have the time at hand to do so either.

Wouldn't worry too much about having a couple hundred in it, but maybe I got suckered?. 70% of the original paint left, new points, tires good, moleboards ok. Just plowed an acre with it last week, turned that 12 year old hillside sod real well (once I put hillside lands on it).

Later, Dave

Dave, I forgot to mention that we paid $60 apiece for the plows, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much if it takes another couple of bucks to get mine to the point where I can use it!
Thanks to everyone who answered!

It sounds like you have an early and late No.44
plow. You will need a hyd. cylinder to raise and lower them. The crank or leaver is used to leavel the plow front to back the cyl. will control depth
and raise and lower the plow. Operators manuels are available from john deere.

ET,
Thanks for the info. It looks like it will cost me about $40 for a cylinder and another $40 for hoses and fittings. I paid $60 for the plow and will have to put tires on it (another $100?)I can sandbalst and paint it myself if I want to. If I ever have to sell it, do you think I can recover my costs? In other words, is it worth $240 with all those improvements?
(Never mind, I think I just answered my own question...I better just have it because I want it)
Any insight would be helpful
Thanks again

Gary

Well, this is a common hydraulic cylinder - you are going to use other things with your tractor, if you plow you gotta disk, etc. About 50% of the implements you will pull use a cylinder - you'll probably need one before long anyhow. You don't have to sell it with the plow, you can sell the plow as you got it, minus the cylinder. So, that $80 is yours to keep for a long time....

Then, I haven't ever seen a plow with new tires on it, unless you just want to sit & look at the thing. Go to the tire service station, they will sell you all the used car tires you want for $5 each, add $10 for an inertube, and you are good to go for a couple of decades. This will slightly decrease the resale value, but not really by much.

(And the tire station is ripping you off, as they have to spend about $4 a tire to dispose of them - you really should be able to beg them for free if you know anyone.)

Hey Gary, sounds like you're finding out some of the same stuff I find. That we do a lot of this fixing and buying stuff just cause we want to. I've got 4 tractors, done lots of mechanical repair, most if it don't make anything look any better than when I bought it, but I just enjoy fixing this stuff and playing with it. I have just a little use for 1 tractor really, and that would be stretching it a bit. Looks like I might make just a few dollars on some of this stuff, but not enough to pay for my time really. Gotta do something for fun though, I don't hunt, fish, run after strange women, or bowl, or golf, so I guess this is it. Good luck.
