Picked up a JD no. eight sickle mower at an auction on Sat.. Seems to be all there, has a few new teeth. Don't know anything about these things other than groundhogs beware as these thinks aren't as kind as a .223. Are manuals still available for these? Will it cut a ditch or a hill ... angle the blade up or down???? How does this gizmo work??? Any help appreciated. Drive bar is wood and should be replaced ... what kind of wood is best???

Like others said, your friendly Deere dealer can get you a parts and operator manual. Both are well worth it.

You should have spare sickle sections and a couple spare rock guards, and associated rivets and bolts on hand. Also at least one spare pitman rod and bolts are wise. You buy that stuff at most farm stores or of course at your friendly Deere dealer.

Deere mowers work well if they're set up by the book and in any kind of good repair.

I have a JD no.8 sickle bar mower. I still use it every once and awhile to trim my fence rows. I just got a new pitman from tractor supply. And I just seen on of the mower manual at my local dealership for that mower.

I can't be specific to the JD 8, but I have a JD 9 that I got a manual for at the JD dealer. Also I've been able to buy new pitman sticks from the JD dealer. My wood working skills aren't the best, so I like to get the JD part with the holes already drilled in the right places. Keep an extra on the shelf. THose sticks never break except when you need them to work and don't have time to run to the dealer for a new one.
