I have a JD model R ground-drive manure spreader...Just started pulling it behind my horses (and forecart) after getting the one tire fixed. Seems to do a real good job, spreading nice and even. Can anyone tell me something about it? What year(s) it was made, was it one of the better or worse ones? One thing about it though, I can't seem to move the lever far enough to get the beaters out of gear...it needs adjustment. The bed chain is on it's own linkage and that goes out of gear fine, but not the beaters. I'm sure I can figure it out, given enough time & patience, but any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is an arm which lifts the drive chain off the top of the large sprocket. This arm gets very stiff with the old grease and dirt in it. Take it off and clean it out. Put in new grease and all should work fine. You may try to adjust the bar which runs from the front lever to the arm. It may just not be picking the chain up high enough.

Jim,

The Model R was made in 1955 according to our local JD Dealer. I just purchased one and am looking for a wheel. Do you know where I might locate one?

The R was advertised at 95 bu. capacity and it was introduced in 1955 and made into the early 1960s. John Deere also made a PTO version the "W". We bought an Model R manure speader at an action for $45. The only thing we had to do to it is replace one of the tires. We use if for spreading manure on our garden and my 1 acre patch of wheat. It has been more reliable then our 400 bu. JD 680 spreader. The lever for the beater on ours is also hard to get out of gear also. I have to get off the tractor and use both arms to get the beater out of gear. Overall, I think for $45 we got a really good buy. Hope this helps.
