I've been looking for a post hole digger to use on my Massey Ferguson 165. My local dealers sell Bush Hog, model 2102, $995.00 and Land Pride, model 25, 1,200.00 both with 18" augers included in those prices. Is one better than the other and are these fair prices? Thanks for any assistance.

I purchased a new Bush Hog post hole digger last fall. Mine has a 12" auger with the bear claw teeth. It is an excellent unit and I've been very happy with it. Last fall it was VERY dry here and when I bought the digger my dealer even told me he didn't think you could dig holes as dry as it was. I dug holes to set corner posts with and was able to bury the auger to the gear box housing each time. The Bush Hog is the way to go.

18" auger? What kind of posts are you using? I use an 8" for my 5" - 6" posts and fill & tamp a lot of dirt. My neighbor drills with a 6" auger, drops in the post, sets it with his loader bucket and neither fills nor tamps.

p.s. I use a generic from Tractor Supply - less than $400.

I'm building a barbed wire fence around 60 acres.
I'm using used PG&E cut off poles for corners and braces. The poles are free and range in diameter from about 9" to 13.5". I may just buy a 12" auger and use the smaller poles.

John and others,

Be sure to use some caution when working with these old utility poles. Most here in the midwest are treated with an insecticide. Older ones, especially ones with a greenish tint with probably have a bit of arsenic in them. But the good news is they'll last forever...

Thanks. My fog has disappeared. I just couldn't picture an augered 18" post hole. I've dug some that big with a shovel though.

I bore big holes like that to plant trees in!! I've planted over 11,000 trees on my place so far, and quite a few were set in big augered holes! Robert

Couldn't tell you how old it is (30 years my guess), but I've got a Danuser, and Robert will tell you that when I'm happy with something, I won't sell it, even if I could get more than I paid.

I've got that Bush Hog digger. I don't know anyone who has the Land Pride, so i can't compare them. The Bush Hog is a good PHdigger, seems to be well made. Unless the Land Pride has a lot heavier rated gear box that you need, i'd not pay any extra for their brand. As for price, call a couple more dealers, and tell them you have CASH! Maybe they have had one sitting around, and want to move it. Robert
