I have an International 730 belly sickle mower mounted on my H. I suspect, but really haven't looked nor care, that it's the model 130 with a 7' bar instead of the 5' that County road crews used to mow roadsides.

As to how it works. Quite well. You don't get a crick in your neck from having to look backwards all the time and since you're mowing ahead of the wheel you don't have to worry about crushing the hay and having the bar just slide over it on the turns. Internally, I have no idea how it works. Other than greasing it and changing the sickle a couple of times a summer I haven't done a thing to it.

Does the sickle run off of the side belt pulley, and do you see many of them for sale.I wonder what they would go for.

Okay, how does it work.
On the pto is a ~10" gear that drives a chain that turns a ~4" gear that is connected to a pto shaft that's attached to a ~6" pulley that drives a belt that turns a ~8" pulley that goes into a gear box that turns rotary motion into back and forth motion to drive the sickle.
It's kind of a Rube Goldberg device, but it works with little maintenance.

In the last 15 years I've seen exactly 2 for sale. I bought 1 and the tractor it was mounted on, the other was attached to a IHC 240 that had been severely abused by a county road crew. I don't understand why you don't see more of them. To me they just make sense. You look forward and down to mow, so you can see what you're doing without torturing your neck and back.
