I found an antique New Idea Manure Spreader that is rusting away back in the woods on our farm. It was probably horse-drawn (based on other pictures in your Implement Alley portion of the website) and it has steel wheels. The big gear by the back left tire has "New Idea Spreader Co." and "Coldwater, OH" molded into the metal. My initial research says that New Idea moved to Coldwater in 1910. Coupling that information with the fact that it has steel wheels, leads me to believe that it was built somewhere between 1910 - 1940.

It's currently in pretty bad shape. The wood sides and bottom are missing and a 30' tree that fell across it has bent the frame. I'm trying to find any information, schematics, pictures, engineering plans, manuals, etc. about the spreader. Since we live on a small horse farm here in Ohio, it would be really neat to try to restore it. Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello I own one too it also has steel wheels. On the side where the New Idea Spreader sign or plate is, it should have a lot number. I called someone at 717-543-5136 and he told me from my lot number that mine is a 1934 #9 spreader.... He was very nice about it and knows a lot about them... Give him a call.. Thanks, Kate in Michigan

I bought a horsedrawn NI spreader several years ago in similar condition except no trees had fallen on it. If the metal parts (frame, apron, beaters) are in decent shape then its not a big deal to put in new wood and have a good spreader.
