I am going to some auctions in search of a rake and a sickle bar mower for my 9N. I will be getting hay off of a maximum of 6 acres and I need to spend as little as I can w/o wasting my cash on junk. What should I look for and how much should I expect to lay out in cash? Also, what features should I look for in particular? thanks in advance,
Jeff

Jeff: your questions sound a lot like the one I posted a couple days ago myself. Back up and scroll down to "50-yr old rookie..." and read the responses I got. Start with the one from TomH; his has a link that'll take you to a website wherein the author goes over every detail of hay production including costs. Very good. Then read the response from ChrisN and finally Old Henry. Actually, read them all, but particularly those.

One of the 3pt. hitch wheel rakes would do a good job, they are very simple, as long as you grease them they will last forever. I saw a new one at a dealer a month or 2 ago for $500, used go for about half. If you want a mower look for a deere or new holland, they will cost more but they are worth it. Hope this helps jeff w

I agree with "hay" here I think. There was some discussion here a while back about using brush-hog to cut hay, you can find in archives. Well I got my brush-hog done yesterday and am looking forward to trying it out when the weather permits.I don't think much of sickle bar mowers, traded mine for a cord-wood saw, they just plug up too much in my grass and weed mix. I would encourage you to look into the brush-hog method before a sickle bar, and you don't have enough h.p. for disc mower. I was looking for a drum mower for my 8-n until I came across the brush-hog idea. I don't know what to tell you about a rake, as I am looking myself.hth

brush hog works pretty fair not so great for grain crops like oats but ok for grass way less trouble than sickle bar

What you spend on a mower usually depends on if its 3 pt hitch or trailer, older vs newer. I bought an IH one that bolts to the drawbar and only has a rear wheel for $75. I would expect to pay $300-$400 for a more modern 3pt hitch if its in good shape. You can get guards and knifes for any machine so thats not a worry. The problem with a sickle bar is it can plug easily if the hay is tipped and twisted from weather. Unless your hay is grass you also need a hay crusher to get it to dry faster and that means 2 trips over the field. A haybine is really the best for doing hay. As for rakes, an old side delivery rake probably won't run you much. You can get tines for most of the older rakes but watch the tires on them. Some of them had odd size tires that will cost a fortune compared to normal tires to replace. A newer style rake could cost you several hundred dollars. Its really hard to put a price on stuff as it differs by location and by auction.

i would not waste my money on a sickle mower. buy a good bushhog and remove the left side and use it to cut hay. a whole lot less maint. and the hay cuts better and faster too. keep the front of the "hog" down low to the ground and the rear up so the cut hay will throw out faster and not get chopped up.
