I need to replace a broken disc blade on my "new to me" disc.Originally the blades were 18",now however the rears are about 17", the broken one, and the fronts are less.New replacements are available but would be 18" again, 16" is also available. How important is it that the blades are relatively even.I don't use the disc that often and would hate to buy all or even half new blades for such limited use.Suggestions welcomed. Thanks

Hal offers good advice...put the littlest to the outside, preferabbly in a back gang. How big is your disk? If not too big, you might consider moving the back gangs to the front, and fronts to back. And, if you are busy and need to roll soon, you might run it just the way it is. Seed doesn't grow in the sack. Then do a good job of repair in the off season. Mi

The front blades will wear faster because they are cutting harder ground. Also if the front blades are cutaway type they will not last as long. I suppose if you wanted to maximize wear and time was no object, you could rotate the blades from the front to the back; I just replace the fronts a little sooner. As far as mixing different sizes, it depends how level a finish you want. If you have it all apart, put the best blades on the front, and then feather different sizes on the axle so that the smaller disks end up on the outside.

Hey George, there's nothing wrong with having one big ole blade in among the others. It might cut a little deeper. A neighbor gave me a 13' foot disk this winter. Well, actually he charged me two pouches of Red Man. I noticed that several of the back blades were broken and he had taken another worn-out blade and doubled them up. I haven't used it yet. I'm sure it will be fine. It's odd though, he has new blade on the front gangs and several of those doubled up rigs on the back. He said it cut just fine.

I got lucky. Bought a sad three point lift disc harrow made by Burch Plow Works in the early 50's. Burch had a few parts still available and sent me a photocopy of the parts list. I made or found substitutes for all the needed parts that Burch could not supply. The axles are 1 1/4 square, same as some of the BIG harrows. Local farmer replaces the discs on his BIG harrow when they are worn to about 16", same as new size for the Burch unit I have. Farmer sells them to me for $1.00 each. Lets me pick the ones I want.

Hey Bus Driver, my AC no-till planter uses 13 &1/2" double disk openers. My neighbor's Int. planter uses 15" openers. When his are worn out, they fit mine just fine. These openers with bearings are about $40 some odd per pair, I think maybe ever higher. He gives em to me free. I reckon that's cheap enough. We find ways to make it, don't we?
