Wow, you have a neat antique 290, perhaps one of the early ones from about 1940. They were built along with the 490s until the late 1950s (if I remember) when they were replaced by the 494s and 495s. Your 290 is kind of a collectible. And the 490 offers a lifetime supply of plates. You can almost run it without a manual. To plant corn in a fairly good seedbed, just set it to run about 2-inches deep. Before you go to the field, plant some corn down the lane with units just barely touching. Put chains on middle sprockets and gear drive in 2 and see the distance you are planting.
Ask your neighbors how far apart they plant in the row and fiddle with different sprockets until you get it about right. Also, note the settings you have right now and what plates are in it. For instance, if it has bean plates note the settings and set those when you start to plant beans. If it has corn plates in it, and you want to plant corn, start with those settings. You really can do this without a manual, but manuals are available for this popular planter at almost any good swap meet. Mike-Iowa

If you indeed have a 290, a 490 manual will work fine and these are easier to come by. Gear box settings are the same and sprokit settings. Haven't seen one on steel wheels, although they list them in the book. Must be an old puppy. Hope this helps. Joe

I bought a 290 back about 1960 and it was used one then, just threw the book out a couple years ago.
