(Some of you must hope I buy something soon, I've been looking for a year.... ;)

I have less than 40 cattle, but it's getting tough to handle all those small square bales... Had a neighbor bale a few rounds for me last year, like that! But don't like to depend on neighbors, timing & all & it either gets expensive or it stresses friendships (been there, done that). I am looking at just 100-200 alfalfa & 100 cornstalk bales a year, so don't need a new machine.

I see a Vermeer 605A in the paper, bet it's pretty cheap, but now I hear they don't handle cornstalks. Any ideas? I know it's ~25 years old, slow pickup, etc.

I also see a Vermeer F coming up on an auction, not familiar with the 'F'? Would that handle cornstalks much better?

Just kinda mulling over my options. Thanks.

What horsepower tractor is needed to operate a Vermeer 605 Super F round baler? I have a 65 horsepower tractor and am concerned about overwelming my tractor.

Paul,
I have a lot of experience with round balers- especially Vermeers. DO NOT buy an A, B, or C series Vermeer. Get an F series or newer. The few extra bucks you spend will be money well spent. Vermeer revolutionized the round baler when they eliminated the press rollers and went with the "open throat" design found on the F series and later. Most of the other manufacturers now have open throat design on their belt type round balers.

Forget the A. The F is a good baler and it will handle corn stalks.
