I live about 30 miles from where the factory is,
now agco.Doesn't have anything to do with topic,
but we used to buy those mowers new out of the
local scrap yard when there was a model change
or defect. It wasn't uncommon for New Idea to
scrap 40 or 50 mowers at time.Bought several
new spreaders, hay conditioners at scrap price.
A few years later they found out and started
mashing them and running forklifts through the
spreaders. One day i saw them dump a hole semi
load of new corn picker rolls and chains.

We had a New Idea sickle mower, rubber tired, wood pitman, PTO driven with a rope trip to raise it. Hydraulic raise was an option. Good mower in it's day. Only mechanical trouble (other than normal sickle maintenance) was replacement of the dogs in the trip mechanism. I don't remember what the model number was. There were several in our neighborhood - we had a good local New Idea dealer at that time.

I know this doesn't help much but I saw a NI sickle at an auction on Saturday. It was in fair condition. Had a flat tire. I didn't see what it went for. Had to have been under $20. I just made this post to say there are a few out there. NI sickles may have been junk but I like using a ground-drive(belt type) early 50s NI rake I borrowed from my neighbor.

Guess we aint sure what your look'en for Mr, JDHUMP. Do I have one? yes, Are they rare? no, Complicated to figure out how to hitch up? No, Complicated to mow with? No, Do they ever break? Yes. Mine has a slow leak in one of the 30 year old tires, have to air it up every time I use it, darn junk anyway.

Hey Butch(OH), Do you have an operators manual by chance???? Im looking for the instructions for the flat plate that the pto carrier bearing mounts to. The flat plate has a bunch of holes in it and they are lettered,A B C D and so on. The different holes are for adjustment depending on the ammount of offset. JDHUMP

Sorry, don't have a manual. I know about the adjustment on the PTO shaft, but never have had to mess with it.

JDHUMP, my research indicates there was only one New Idea Model 30 A sickle mower ever sold! In spite of intensive ad campaigns, generous rebates, and very low prices, New idea just couldn't move this machine. So I guess you have a pretty rare piece of junk. Got pictures?

Our neighbor had one back in the early 50's but I have no idea what model it was. We have an 8MM movie of him cutting hay with it.
