I need new (used) tires for my JD 290 corn planter. Can't read the size on the old rubber. Anyone out there know the right size?
Where is a good place to get them?

Any secrets to removing the wheels from the planter?

Thanks for you help in advance.

Chris

Years ago I used a 490 to plant corn and soybeans with, set it up at 36 inch rows because that was as narrow as it would go and the guy with the 4400 JD combine said that was as narrow as his "wide row" cornhead could handle. Anyway I blew one of the tires but was in luck because a 600-16 off the Super M front I had laying around fit it. Old tractor fronts are ideal.

The tire size on the 290 is 650X15. Those bias tires are getting hard to find. You have to loosen your chain tightner and take the chains off the sprokets and then there is a couple of bolts on each end of the axle you have to take out. Then you have to jack it up and let the whole axle assembly out the bottom and you can take the wheel off the hub. Good Luck Joe

Check that wheel size, I have one that takes a 6.70 x 15 and a second planter that takes 6.00 x 16

Close inspection on a sunny day with a damp towel indicates the markings of 600 and a 16 on one of the tires. I think I will be looking for a pair of 6.00x16 tires this week. Looks like at least one of the wheels may have an tube as well.

Thanks for your help on this. I would like to plant an acre or two this spring.
