If you were going to buy a set of say..2x16's...what would you buy? I really don't like the JD's I've got now(though they are 2x12's), they clog up really bad in trashy fields. I thought about 3x12's or 14's, but I really don't do that much plowing so I think I'm gonna stay with the 2 bottom. A lot of Fords and MF's in this area. Would would y'all suggest?? Thanks. Casey

I use a disk plow for breaking new ground and then subseqent turning of my land. I own a light little 2-14 Dearborn Prior Model plow. It is nice but it is light. I've been looking for a 3-14 with little luck. In the meantime I have been using a 2-26 disk plow with tremendous results.

Only issue is monitoring the depth after the first few passes to ensure I don't go to deep. Will try to post photo later.

I think most of the older plows had a problem with plug ups in corn stubble, regardless of the condition of the coulters. I think newer plows are designed with more clearance between the moldboard and the frame so they don't plug up as easy. To avoid plug ups on corn fields, I run over it once with my disk in the fall. The stalks rot enough over the winter so they plow under pretty well with my old JD plow. If its tall grass/weeds you can mow it first with something that will chop it up.

I've got a hydraulic lift JD 3x14 trailer plow that plugs ALOT. It has decent coulters etc, but it can't handle much trash. I also have an old wheel lift Oliver 3x16 with concave coulters and it goes through just about anything, very rarely plugging. It does a nice clean job of plowing too. In my heavy clay soil the hydraulic lift is nice if I get into a slippery spot and gotta get the plow out of the ground to avoid getting stuck. The wheel lift doesn't work if you're not moving or the wheel is slipping on wet ground. What I'd REALLY like is my Oliver with hydraulics!

Casey, Up here in Ohio the Oliver plow was highly thought of, as was the International Harvester. Usually the bigger the moldboard, the beter the clearance, but in heavy clay ground it also leaves a bigger slab to try and break with the disc if the ground is wet. Good coulters also help quite a bit! Years ago we used Lantz coulters and they would slice through most stubble. Good luck, and watch out fer them dern rocks!

Casey, Do you have coulters on your plow. That should stop them from plugging up in a trashy field. I don't know what your trying to plow under, but if it is sod, then coulters are much needed.

Well, I bought a 4-18 IH 720 plow last fall & manage to plug it a couple of times in cornstalks - with good coulters, and a 720 has a lot of clearance! The old oliver wheel lift plows really plugged bad, as did the JD 145H. Just pointing out that you will never get to perfection.

Anyhow, the wider the bottom, the less it plugs, so going with 2-16 over 3-12 is a good idea! And of course good new large coulters help a bunch. If yours are wore down small, sometimes none are better than old ones! Singl-arm coulters are better than 2-arm coulters.

Then you want whatever plow gives you the most distance between bottoms, and the highest distance from the ground to the beam. Hydraulic lift helps clear out the plugs a bit compared to wheel lift.

As you can tell from what I've used, brand doesn't matter much to me, but in our heavy clay soils Oliver/White has a good reputation of pulling pretty easy & plowing well.
