I want to break some ground for a garden in grassy, but rocky soil. What style of plow (or discs?) is preferable?

If the rock is solid outcropings then your only choice is a disk plow. If the rocks are say "fist size" the the moldboard will work well. Good luck and take your time.

Whatever you use, take it slow. Get as many rocks out of your area asap. They are expensive.

I would use the moldboard type plow for a couple of reasons. You can get and old pull behind plow very reasonable and if your only going to plow a garden, it is simple and quick to hook and unhook and put away for next year. The only thing is you have sod to plow under, it should be plowed and left lay until the sod decays. This will take quite a while. I usually plow down sod in the fall and not harrow until the following spring. You soil will work up good then without to much sod turning up when you do harrow or disc.
