I have located my dad's old John Deere Wagon Running Gear. I haven't aquired it yet but, I'm gonna try. It was bought between 1960 and 1970. How many different varieties of running gear did John Deere Make? What type of bearings does it have? The front end is froze up? Is there bearings on the wagon besides in the wheels? Thanks for helping on such a simple question.

I don't know much about the production years on them but they take a standard timken bearing. found at most any good parts store. the bearing # is on the bearing

The John Deere 953 & 963 were made sometime in the 50's but don't know how long they were made. Look for a decal along the reach. Just my 2 cents worth.

According to an Alan King "JOHN DEERE NOTEBOOK" I have, the JD 943,953 and 963 date from at least 1949. Quoting from the book: "The low priced 943...has bolster stakes on the axles and is somewhate lighter in construction than the speedy, non-whipping No. 953 wagon. The No. 963 rubber-tired wagon is similar to the No. 953, but is made heavier throughout, for fast, extra heavy duty hauling." According to the literature, all were equiped with TIMKIN tapered roller bearings.

I've got a 953 and a 963. One is a late 50's model, the other is early 60's. The 963 is indeed heavier, and they do have roller bearings on the axles. My 953 has 15" wheels, the 963 has 16" wheels, but wheel size may not be "model specific." They are good, solid gears, and they certainly do trail nicely on the highway.

John d: I've thought they were made that late. My own 953 really does trail nice and straight. The OM I have for the 953 looks like it is of the same vintage as an A and not necessarily the same age as the gear. They really do bring a premium over other brands of gears at farm sales. Mine has been in the family for 40 years.

Mine have both been in the family since they were new. We bought the 953 sometime in the late 50's and used it under a big Farmhand self-unloading box which was a great combination for silage, chopped hay, and ear corn. It would hold well over 150 bushels of ear corn, and was a dream to trail on the road. As farming operations changed when I left for college, Dad bought the 963 with a Kilbros hopper bed in the fall of '62. It has outlasted the bed, which is now in pretty poor shape. Since I'm not farming anymore, but bought all the remaining equpiment along with the barn in a deal with Dad about 5 years ago, I've got both wagons. The Farmhand box is long gone and I've got a flatbed with low sides on the 953. It's been used for misc. duty, parades, and hayrides over the years. The other one is my "rolling scaffold" that I've used in various barn/house repairs. I put a flat top on it that's about 9' off the ground, and with proper cleats nailed to the top I've set ladders on it, painted from the top of it, and moved bundles of shingles from it onto a roof. The running gears of both wagons have had considerable use, but are as solid as when purchased.
