going to look at a belsaw sawmill on saturday...pto powered, 46" blade, 14' capacity.
anyone have suggestions on anything i should be specifically looking for, or looking out for?

2nd question...currently have only a 20hp tractor which is a bit undersized for this mill at full capacity...think it will be ok for smaller stuff maybe up to 16" or so. I do have a flywheel from an old flat belt mill that is about 30" in diameter and about 100 lbs. will it help, or hurt, my 20 hp tractor to put this flywheel in the driveline? assuming i should gear it up from the 540 rpm any suggestions? 2x 3x ?

thanks

Hi Kim; I have owned an m-14 mill since 1983. I am setup stationary and I have the metal base. I have had to brace and reinforce mine alot to make it work reasonable. A very light mill and meant for hobby sawing only. I have a 10 ft carriage with 2 dogs. The saw gude is very light and I have built a much better and heavier one. I have had to repulley the carriage drive to slow the speed down and it helps alot. It is essential to keep your blade turning at max speed and my blade is hammered for 450 rpms. I can saw smaller softwoods with a farmall H, but usually larger lgs or oak I use 70 hp tractor. Out of the grate, my Mill would not do much. There are other brands on the market, that my friends are using, that for a little more money are a lot more mill. Before you buy it, see it run and be sure the blade runs true. From time to time you will need to have the blade rehammered to run true. Liability insurance for a cirlular sawmill is hard to find. Hope this info helps and good luck.
