Is there a spacific reason that something other than hard wood can not be used for the pitman arm on a #5 JD mower? If the slip cluch is adjusted correctly why would'nt a steel pitman arm work? Thanks for the input.

There is a sudden shock factor that I believe appies. The clutch can not react quickly enough to compensate for a knife section suddenly locking against a guard. Clutch slipage seems to be designed more for too much material being forced through the mower and not for sudden obstruction. Rather than have a casting break, the designers opted to have the wooden arm snap. I remember my dad making replacements by hand to have at the ready.

Bob A is right. The wood pitman arm is the "fail safe" device to keep from tearing things up. My Dad got tired of replacing wood pitman arms in his old tow-type New Idea mower and fashioned one using 1-1/2" pipe. After 2 or 3 snapped knife sections he went back to wood although he used a pick handle for the pitman arm.

I have two mowers one massy one case and got tired of the wood deterirating and made pittmans out of 1x1 aluminum about .120 wall it will generally still break before a knife but way stronger than wood and it doesn't rot

PA inspection requires a pitman arm for a '75 Dodge Midas Motorhome. Other than a machinist
mfg the device, is there a method of ordering pitman arm thru Dodge?
