Anyone out there have any leads on where I might find 6' reel gangs? Anyone still make them?

I mow about 15 acres/week with a 5' 3-spindle finish rotary behind a Ford 2000 3 cyl. Does a good job but kicks up a dust storm... lots of noise too.

All thoughts & opinions greatly appreciated.

I've got a 6' flail, 7' 3-reel gang (Worthington) and a 8' floating rotary. They each have advantages (and disadvantages).

My reels have 5 blades (called a rough mower). I think the fairway mowers have 9 blades. You want something in the rough mower range.

Previous poster was wise. Look out for a deal on a used golf course mower. I've seen 'em go for "spit" at country auctions. Just my opinion, but I would stay away from gang-reels made for home-owners (for your particular needs).

Greetings,
I was on Bush Hog's website yesterday and saw new reel setups of different configurations.
They have a dealer locator and this may lead you to some used stuff as well. Also Check with some golf coarses thay may have some old gangs lying around. Toro commercial turf dealers would be a good source as well. good luck on your search.

Thanks for the info... I didn't realize gangs could cause so much trouble. I've heard that reels can be touchy, but I think many operators tended to run them too slow over the ground. Years ago I seem to recall gangs mowing at a pretty fast speed; certainly faster than a rotary deck.

What I'd like is to find someone around my area here who has gangs I could try, but I haven't seen any for years... maybe there's a reason why.

Thanks again.

I mowed with a reel gang mower one summer when I worked at a sod farm. If you're mowing good grass, they work really well. If your grass has many weeds, they don't work so well. They're also a bit of a pain if you have to mow around a lot of trees or other obstacles.

They are really quiet (compared to a rotary finish mower). If I'd known of a decent source for them before I bought my 6ft finish mower, I would have considered getting one.

I did what you're about to do and was not pleased. Gang reels require a lot of maintenance and constant adjustment. I bought an older three gang set from the local golf course and wound up scrapping them. They slide in wet areas, clog and are altogether a pain. I've been using a 6 1/2 ft. JD flail here of late. Bought it at a County Highway Equipment aution for $200. It does not cut quite as clean as a finisher, but it's quiet and doesn't sling rocks like a rotary.
