I'm thinking of buying a McCormick 46 baler that appears to be in good shape. What would be a fair price? The asking price is $250. It was to have baled hay last year and worked fine. The color is all white w/ red decals. Could it be a demo model? Are these machines not to be red?

I am also thinking of buying a McCormick 46 baler. I have a Farmall super C that is fully restored. The PTO is rated at 23.7hp. Would it handle the 46? Thanks, Terry

The No. 46 IH baler would have been painted white from the factory because it was a special demonstrator from the late 50s or early 60s. I'm 60 years old and was on hay hauling crews as a teenager (11,000 bales most years, all lifted twice by hand). I've been on a hay hauling truck with three IH balers in the same field, and one of them was painted white, but I do not remember the number. White painted tractors such as the Super C are very collectible, but the paint won't make this old timer bale any better! The standard color for this baler is IH red from that era.

IH did have some equipment that was painted white for demostration. Not sure of the models. Useually they are red. This may be a nice find for you. I say buy it.

I have a model 46 and its all red. If the baler your looking at is in good shape then $250 is a very good price. Unlike some IH balers, the 46 is a very good baler.
