How do you guys dispose of your used antifreeze? There don't seam to be any recycling sights around hear. I'm tempted to dump it in the drain at our local carwash. Dues most carwashes have sanitary sewer hook ups?? What about brake fluid

Hello,
Ethylene glycol is a biodegradable alchohol which is toxic to animals and humans. However, it will rapidly loses its toxicity when exposed to air. Any that is spilled essentially becomes "bug candy" for the all of the critters living in the soil. It was once classified by the EPA, but has had its reportability requirements reduced since the late 90s.

Just a note, to be very careful in storage, transit, and disposal. Anti-freeze has a sweet taste and animals will ingest it. That can be harmful, and often fatal. Be sure to keep it safely away from them.

Indiana counties have recycling centers, where individuals(not businesses) may take any chemical, battery, oil etc. for disposal.

Check with your state codes. Ours, MN, says that it must be recycled, usually at a hazaderous waste site, or local garage. Most places will tell you they charge a fee, but some places it is illegal to charge. We save our oils in a 30 gal drum, when full we take to our recycling center. They tell us it is $20 because of the amount, but we tell them what the law says, and it is free. Don't dump it down a drain, could be big problems later.

Rod, Anti-freeze is pretty bad stuff, they used to say you could pour up to one gallon down your sewer (septic tank) without harm, I guess that would be per week. Not sure they even recommend that now, find out what the local garages do, the dealer where I worked had a barrel for used coolant and Safety-Kleen pumped it out for a price. Most places would let you dump a little for free or a charge for a bunch, take a dozen donuts and talk to one of the mechanics... Brake fluid is another matter, that stuff is very toxic and should be disposed of properly. Again we had a barrel and when it got full(takes a long time) I think it was a substantial charge but they took it and dealt with it safely. Check in your yellow pages for waste haulers, there must be somebody in your area.
