Was $50 too much to give?

Just bought a MF 12 baler today for $50. It has been sitting out for a number of years but baled fine when it was parked. I know nothing about balers but figured it was worth $50 to learn about the things. I have a MF dealer only 2 miles away and he said he could get me parts. I figure I will oil it all down for the next couple months then start tinkering with it. I guess my question is will it bale again if it has been out without spending a ton of money on it. Also does anyone know where I can go to get a manual or old copies of a manual other than the dealer?
Thanks for any help
kenny

I bought a J.D. 14t a while back for $50.00, put about $100.00 and alot of elbow grease into it and it now bales around 2000 bales a year. Sound like a good buy to me.

What? I paid 400 for my #10. But mine was in a shed and maintained by a Massey mechanic. The manual reprint was only 10 dollars or less. Maybe it would be worth it to take it to your dealer and let them go through it once for timing, etc. If you break the needles you will out a hundred bucks or more.
My 2 cent

SOunds like you did good. Like Tom said get the manuels first. I bought my first a year ago. J.D. 65. for 200,00. (i paid to much) I always buy part and tech manuels. The prices for each usually pay for themselves right away. I didnt know spit and now probably know more than I ever wanted to. HA (wish i knew as much before I bought it.) I completely overhauled it and put another 250.00 inher. GOod luck and be real careful.

Kenny: Nope, $50 was probably a good deal, even if all you do is learn with it.

I bought a MF 10 baler last year for the same reason. Tried to run it--broke it almost immediately (I'm a mechanical engineer and long-time backyard mechanic, so I thought I could figure it out...dumb move!)

Ordered manuals from the local MF dealer. I recommend you do that before trying to run the thing (parts to repair mine cost about $500, and I did the installation!) The manual reprint from MF is cheap (I think the operators book was $7, the parts book was $10; wait was about 2 weeks.) and they are well written and tell you just about everything you need to know to get started and check it out. "Timing" of the machine is critical, and if it is "out of time" something expensive will break.

Because of the cost of parts, I have since bought a second MF 10 baler (cost me a lot less than new parts, and most are in good shape).

good luck, have fun,
Tom
