A friend just gave me a woods 3 pt. backhoe. It's not bent or broken;but the cylinders are 98% rust. What's the best way to replace these shafts? Will stainless shafts hold up? While doing this, should I increase shaft diameters? I want to put this together generically;without dealer parts. Suggestions, please.

Find an hydraulics repair shop in your area. They can re-chrome the rods for you, or fabricate new ones if need be. much cheaper than new. Increasing the rod diameter will reduce the force the cylinder develops while retracting, not a good idea.

What size of Woods? I have a 650 (6.5 foot digging depth) that I've had for several years. The stock cylinders have been fine as far as size and power, I wouldn't think the effort of modifying them would be particularly productive.

Can't help you on the stainless steel idea, don't know enough about metals.
