I have a question about sickle mower types. I going to buy a used sickle mower in the near future and I would like to know the pros and cons of both 3pt and trailer kind of mowers. I have seen auction price results on sickle mowers but I don't know whether they are 3pt or trailer kind. How do I know what kind they are for example JD #5 or #7 or any of the NH models? Is there a web site with any photos of these mowers? I don't want to give much for one $250.00 USD what will be my best bet. Going to use it with a MF 175. Thanks
kenny

I have a JD #9 which is a 3pt type. I like it cause it was free. I've seen other #9 mowers sell for $150-$250. The JD dealer still has parts for it. I use it behind a Ford 850.

I have a New Holland 451 7 foot sickle bar mower. We bought it new and still use it every year. It's a great mower. It's easy to mount, easy to understand, and easy to maintain. I bale about 10 acres of hay per year and it's perfect for what I do.

Kenny;
I own a NH 350 7' cut 3ph mower and it works very well. It seems to adapt to different tractors quite easily. It will mow heavy dry timmothy/clover to about 3.5 mph. They still fetch the best part of a $1000.00 in this part of eastern Canada. Can't comment too much on other mowers except the few people who I have let use mine are impressed with how well it works. Know of a friend that has a MF dynabalance that seens to work ok. Hope this helps. Roy

Kenny, any 3-pt. or trail type should work with your tractor, keep in mind that parts availability should be a concern, my brand new New Idea 522 3 pt is the same mower as the old IH's. After locating a mower check to see if parts are available. I have run both types and each has good points, some folks stay away from the trailer type because they are unfamiliar with them and they are usually cheaper but you will need a set of hydraulic outlets on your tractor to run one and also have two more tires to keep aired up. You don't need a 3pt. hitch for the trailer type. You can "cut" the corner a little nicer with the trailer type but, I always pick the mower up and swing out so not to have any hay standing. I have run JD, IH, NewIdea and New Holland and have liked each one equally well. I bought my New Idea because I have a good dealer, Everett Tractor, Murchison, TX, and he was slightly cheaper than the others, had a good stock of parts, friendly and helpful. Johnny

3 point need to be specific manufactured to the individual brand of tractor, trail type don't.
