any opinions, good or bad, about a late 70's early 80's NH round baler? It's the one with chains instead of belts. It hasn't done many acres, I know the owner. Was there more than one model, are there good and bad ones? TIA, Karl.

I built a sprayer out of a small lp tank and hose all chains down real goood with used oil every day , twice and three times if baling alot . Dont forget the grese gun ether and just dont run to fast , I`ve only sheared 1 pin in the 5 years I run it

I have a NH 845 chain type round baler. We purchased it new and still use it. We did have all new chains, bearings, etc. put on it last year. Thought it was cheaper to do that than trade for another baler that I knew nothing about. With the rework the baler should be good for several more years. Our baler seems to work well. I like the manual tie as it is simple to work on if needed and easy to understand. Also it doesn't seem to take a lot of horsepower to run this baler. I pull it easily with my John Deere 5105. Good machine for a small time farmer like me.

Yeah the NH chains are a pretty good baler. They're not as fast as the newer balers, but with a little maintenance and some elbow grease they bale just as good, and a whole lots cheaper.

What wears and rust out on the NH is the floor panels and the bottom chain bearings.

The main thing on a NH chain baler is to keep it greased and the chains adjusted right and pour some diesel fuel or kerosene on the chains every day or two you run it to keep them clean and lubed.

I just raise the door with the baler running and shoot fuel onto the chains til it slings all over the bale chamber.

When you raise the door be sure you put the cylinder locks in place and don't stand under the door at any time without the locks in place.

If the chains are too tight they wear out the chains and bearings, and if the chains are too loose the bales are ragged looking and loose on the outter edges.

I've still got one of the 845 NH chain type. After I got it home and fine tuned it has baled for 12-15 years with nothing but a few bearings and adjustments on it.
