What in your opinion is the most interesting implement? FOr me it has to be the hay rake. it just dazzles me watching it all the time. so simple, yet so neat...

Your turn!

Karl

Pull type combines! Most of all the John Deere 30.

I think 3pt logging winches are pretty cool, several different kinds and amazinly powerful and the best ones work as part of a system, winch in, snug up, lift, skid, drop.

Other logging stuff is pretty cool, especially a forwarding trailer with hydraulic log loader grapple.

I am not sure if a pto powered sawmill counts as an implement, but they are pretty cool also :-)

everyone knows it is the cornpicker whether pull type, semi mounted ,fully mounted,or self propelled. though watching the soil fall over behind the plow and hay over the sickle mower is a close second and third !

What about a threshing machine? Must have been a godsend in their day. OSHA would definitely throw a fit about it today what with all those exposed moving parts. And how about a steam engine-both agricultural and railroad types? Probably the nearest thing to a living and breathing piece of equipment ever built.

Running a baler sure beats the heck out of working behind it.

That is why you have a kicker on it. Our NH baler has a basket thrower on it and that is a neat working feature. I love to watch that thing hoist a 70lb bale to the back of a 18ft wagon like it was nothing.

Not really an implement, but I had a pond dug a couple of years ago. Had never really watched a bulldozer up close before. Man, what power. I dug a few post holes through that clay so I know how thick it is, that D4H just pushed it along without breathing hard. Next time I rent one and drive it myself...

I think I'm nost facinated with some of the old horse drawn equipment. I love to watch things like a corn binder or a grain binder working. There is a lot of engineering in one of these things that go back to a much simpler time. Its like reliving history.

A mounted corn picker. When a picker is working right and field conditions are good, it's a joy to run. It's almost like the thing is ALIVE!

Maybe it's not an implement, but my Bobcat skidsteer is my favorite. It allows us to get a lot of work done easily,it's like a robot. Close second is a hydroswing mowerconditioner. You can cut on both sides of the tractor and start fields easily.

I love to watch the "twister" on an old wire tie New Holland baler. If it wasn't so dirty I would build a seat and just ride there and watch that mechanism work. It is so complex and efficient, how long did it take them to design all that? We know it is to complex because the newer models are much simpliar. Dick Davis

I have to agree with Bandit, the plow is my favorite implement, one can watch the work being done and know it will be seen and judged by others until the next implement works it over. Also no matter how good the operator is, there is always a field that will be a challenge to " tip up-side-down" and have it look the way he wants it to. Bob

A deep ripper. The way the soil lifts up about 6 inches and then sets back down the way it was is amazing.

A combine. Complicated machine, took years to perfect it. Interesting how much can go wrong and a how much parts they use and cost. My 2-cents.

My fondest memory of the farm is my Dad combining wheat with an Allis Chalmers Allcrop pulled by a Super W-6. The old AC had a bagging platform that I never recall being used, but I'd ride on it, and scoop a handful of wheat out of the bin for a 'chaw' every now and then.

I think my second choice would be a silage chopper. A neighbor custom-cut our silage with a JD 70 diesel and a two-row chopper. That JD 70 was about the biggest tractor I could imagine at the time. The smell of freshly chopped corn is another favorite, I can smell it now...

The hay rake is an interesting thing. But i like the plow. It's such a feeling to be able to break the ground and smell the mud.... and feel powerful in your own little world.
