I have a chance to get a 14T that was in working order 1 year ago, but has been left outside and uncovered during that period. Or I can get a 24T that the owner quit using 2 years ago when he started having problems with the knotter. He bought a new knotter and now it does not tie at all. But it has been shed kept and well oiled. Both balers are listed a $500 bucks. Also what year range was the 14T and 24T's sold?

Thank
Dave DeGan

How did the model numbers go???? I had a 214W JD. At least if my memory serves me right, that was the number. It was made in 1958, according the the JD dealers parts book. It took 4 rolls of wire to make it tie, and each bale ended up with 2 knots on each wire. I'm wondering if the twine balers were numbered differently???

I am going to give the 24T a good looking over this weekend, I agree, it might be the better buy.

Thanks for the good advise and info!

See if you can get somebody who's worked on one to look at the 24T. If the knotter's not bad off, the 24T would be the better buy.

If you can't, then probably go for the 14T.

A 14T will work, but keep the knife sharp and aligned. Keep a few shear pins handy. They both are good balers and you should be able to get parts and books at Deere Implement place.

I have a 14t bailer and yes there are more shear pins and all but if you are a smart person when running it you'll do fine. All you have to rember is not to load to much in and it won't miss. The knotters do "miss" but I have found the reason why, to much grease. If it is over greased the knotters go to fast and they miss. I still give all the spots (32 of them) there share, but the knotters I give less. I have 45 acers with a bought 2 in rye straw and 3 in hay. With this and the neighbors fields 2000 + bales go in the barn for mulch in the fall and spring. The mulch is for the garlic and other crops that we grow. Little is sold and used other than for mulch. In the 5+ years we have used this 14t I think last year was the first time we sheared off the flywheel pin. Mother was loading to much in and choked her out. I have to ride the wagon . No kicker on this unit. Who cares any ways. Good exercise ha ha. ed

The 14-T was first made in 1954. It was replaced in 1962 by the 24-T.

i owned a 14 t which didnt always tie the best. but the 24 has less shear pins to break and i think it is a better deal. with a new knotter and someone who knows balers i wouldnt hesitate to buy the 24 t. dont remember the years made but the 24t is newer and i think better. but it depends on the mechanic who sets it up for you . some of these guys who work on them have forgot more about them than the manufacturers ever knew! but both are somple and sometimes you just need to tinker until you figure it out. just get a few bales ahead of time and try running them through until you get it working . just be careful feed it the bale into the machine preferably have it outside where you can pick it up as in a field situation . which with you staying on tractor would be safer . some of us have ben lucky ,some that arent here anymore werent!!!pto s are dangerous. keep the shields on and your clothing secure .good luck
