My drill will not handle beans. I am looking for a cheap way to plant soybeans. Does not need to be hi-tech! I do not use sprays, so I need to be able to cultivate mechanically. Suggestions/war stories appreciated.

I bought a JD 494 4 row planter at an auction for $1. The fertilizer boxes are rusted up, but the seed hoppers complete with plates for beans seems to work fine. I don't plant, but for the price I couldn't pas it up.

Lazyhorse, I might be intersted in that planter if you want to get rid of it.
I'll give ya double your money.
Seriously, do you want to sell it and where are you located?

I thought I got a steal, not so!I picked up a JD 494A four row in august for $25. My fertilizer boxes are rusted beyond repair,I have 21 sets of cast and plastic plates for it. I also have granular herbicide, insecticide boxes in good shape. I couldn't pass it up either. I might plant 10-15 acres of corn and 10-15 acres of beans with it. It is set at 38" rows right now. A very good IH 56 4-row went for $40 after that should have bought that on too.

Hey Mike, I'm one of the last people around here that still cultivates beans. I plant my hill beans with a no-till AC planter on 19" rows, I think. My beans in the Mississippi River bottom, I usually plant with a 7000 JD. I am a small-time farmer. I can keep my expensives low by cultivating, and I just like to do it. Since I teach, I have the summers off, and cultivating keeps me out of trouble. The 7000 or 7100 planters are good but rather old planters. You ought to get a pretty good 4-row for less than a thousand. You can sometimes find a 6-row for even less. These planters come with 1.6 bu. hoppers and some that are around 3 bu. Mine has l.6 hoppers. It is very easy to set this planter for depth and seed rate. Shoup has most of the parts and J.D. still carries the parts. It is a very good planter for a poor man. That's me.

What kind of drill, some will work even though it's not on the label... ;)

Most old corn planters work with the right plates.

I'm looking for an International 285 (and other close numbers) setup, these were corn planter units that drive off their own closing wheel. They mount on a 3-point bar. So, you put 11 or so at 15" centers and you have a nice 15" bean planter. Get an old cultivator & set up the shanks to match.

Hey, that sounds like a good excuse to buy an old tractor with a single front wheel and skinny back tires to restore so you have something to pull the cultivator through those narrow rows. :)
