Bought a four row planter which was mounted on a 1952 B John Deere. The press wheels are steel, the tanks are positioned between the front and rear wheels when attached to the tractor. Its mounted both to the frame and front of the tractor and has long adjustable arms to set the depth control(I think). From the looks of the decals it may have been made in the late 30's. It has sprockets mounted on the axles and are pulled by two long flat chains. Any idea what model it is and what it may actually be worth.

Dave,

Yes it's a planter, it has markers, shoes which run down the beds to plant cotton and swords for and swords to open the row for seed. Wouldn't a side dresser have two places for the fertilizer to come out instead of one flexible tube running the center of the row? From everyone that I have talked to in person about this it is just called a front mount planter. Not sure about the year or model number yet.

Take care, David

Are you sure its a planter? There were also side dresser attachments for tractor mounted cultivators that sound like what you describe. They were designed to apply fertilizer along the row as you cultivated. Do the hoppers use seed plates or just a rotating spring finger?
