Plow sizes are the width that the plow bottom cuts in the soil. The plow share is actually longer than the width but it sets at an angle to the frame of the plow to give the turning action on the soil as it travels up the moldboard. The new big plows actually are adjustable as to width so you can cut a 16"-20" width on each share. Total width of each pass is the share width x the number of shares:2-14" = 28" cut 24-18" = 36'

Joe,
For a two wheel drive tractor my JD owners manual uses 15-20 hp per bottom. This will depend on soil types, sandy soils using less and clay soils taking more. My soils are fairly light but I've got somes clay spots that make my 4960 (190 hp)kick the governor wide open pulling 7-18".
