I need some advice on the purchase of a tine harrow. I have 20 acres of bahia grass broken into 4 plots that I rotate some beef cattle thru. I need to drag the fields after discing, break up manure, work in fertilizer, etc. Can someone recommend a brand and size to be pulled behind a small (27hp) 4wd ford tractor? also, any idea on the cost?

thanks

Some of the harrows described below are what I think we used to call a "spike-tooth drag", and will work okay, and if you can find one at an auction would be the cheapest way to go. The only drawback I can think of is that they may damage the sod a bit more than you might prefer.

Another option might be a spring-type harrow that uses wire springs for teeth, looks like a giant economy sized lawn dethatcher. Northern Tool sells 'em, wouldn't mind having one myself, but they're a bit pricey for me.

Heres a link to a picture of the one Northern sells. Others may sell them cheaper.

Sounds like you need a S-tine harrow or a Spike. A Heavier type of spike with 3 or more sections and hydraulic cylinder lift, wheels is called a Harrowgator in my area. They can useually be picked up for $25-$75 depending of width. Hardly anybody uses them anymore. I have a little 4' Spike with 3" spikes which I believe is a International which does a great job.

Around 'here' you can pick up the old metal ones for about $7 per section at auction sales, will last you a lifetime. You might be able to handle 4 sections on smooth ground, 2 sections will work all the time for you. If you don't get a level beam, can be welded up from heavy pipe or a strong 2.12 & some chains. Not sure if these things are even built new?

Around 'here' the iron spikes are worth more than the flexable springs, seems the springs don't really do much. But price & availablity can be very different where you are.
