Greetings,

I need your input, I'm shopping for a new 5' 3pt rotary mower, and I've come down to two models, one is the "Bush Hog" Squealer, and the other is the "Woods" model 160, both are about the same price, does anyone have any pros / cons regarding these two models?

Thanks

Chip

Personally I'd go with the Bush Hog brand, but as mentioned before I'd go with a heavier duty unit to begin with. This summer I bought a new Bush Hog brand 8 foot pull type. It is a very nice unit and built very heavy. It's great. I like Bush Hog equipment.

The original squealers (SQ60, SQ72, etc.)were decent machines, if not asked to cut brush, or were over powered. The new series of Squealers (SQ600, SQ720, etc.) are much better built, and have sturdier gearboxes than the earlier units. The Woods 160 is a pretty good unit as Woods cutters go, but only because they stepped away from their old, rediculous gearbox output/blade bar set up and basically copied Bush Hogs proven design. Either of these machines will probably serve you well, but before you buy, price replacemant blades, blade bolts, the common stuff. The Woods will probably be substantally more expensive to maintain.

I can honestly say i've NEVER had to replace anything on my Woods. Not even on the older totally abused one!! I'm still on the origional blades too!! I've pushed over more than one apple trees thats over 3-1/2" diameter, and ler it rip!!! If you have enough HP, it will chop the tree to tiny pieces!!! Robert

I've had a squealer. I used it on small trees and brush along with grass. When i traded it in, the dealer i find most knowledgeable here, with out seeing it, lowered his offer, because he said the deck was cracked around the gear box. I said it wasn't! He said i didn't know where to look, and if it wasn't he would give me more. I took it in, and sure enough he pointed to all the cracks around the gear box. :(
I bought a Woods from him, BUT, it's a lot heavier duty unit. It has held up very well!! I then purchased a Woods 160 from him, to have a lighter duty hog, for a smaller Kubota i all so own. It's all so doing well, but it is on a lot lower HP tractor than it's rated for.
I'm NOT telling you the Woods is better than the Bush Hog, what i am telling you, is to buy a HD model the first time!!! This is very important!!! All so, i wouldn't buy one with out a slip clutch, no more shear bolt protection for me!!
Having said that, in my opinion, useing my "gut feeling only", i'd buy the Woods over the Bush Hog.

No comment from me regarding the brand. When you get the new mower, consider taking off the nuts that hold the blades to the center disc and the nut that holds the center disc to the gearbox. Coat the threads with nickel based anti-seize compound and reinstall them. If not, when they are to be removed in a few years for blade replacement and/or replacing/repairing the center disc, it may be necessary to use a grinder or torch to remove these nuts. Another suggestion: If you have children or dogs, have another person make SURE that they do not get anywhere near where you are mowing. I love to mow with my 6' mower.
