Is a New Holland 269 baler a very high capacity machine? I located a 269 in average condition, he wants $800, going to offer less. Is the wire tie system reliable, Iguess the wire is more expensive then twine but there isn't to much to pick from around very close. Is there anything in particular to pay close attention to? Thanks.

NH 269 is a very fine machine. Never had any experience with the wire tie models but the 26X series twine-tie balers were very good. We had a 267 which is very similar that we put over a half a million bales through in its life. look at the six feeder fingers in the hay chamber of the pickup. make sure they are all there, cost about $40 each at FNH dealer and they are alum./magnesium alloy. look at the knotter stack and make sure the things aren't grooved severely. some grooving in the contact parts are ok, but deep grooves will have to be built up. check needle eyes. if they have deep grooves, they will have to be brazed back to round holes.
thats about it.

i had a 268(twine tie). had several problems with bales tying. traded it for a tedder. new owner disassemblied the pto clutch and found catch plate was missing 3 of 4 holes. after he replaced that, it baled fair. 268s and simlar balers in Se Tn are selling for less than $500 when you find one.
