I borrowed a digger made by international digger. I have it mounted on the back of my 9N Ford and I am unable to get it to dig more than a foot deep. my ground is not hard. Any ideas on what is happening here? Also, I need to find a source for replacement edges for the auger. Does anyone know where I can find this company? I am pretty sure it is not a part of IH but that is all I know.

Thanks,
Jeff

I had the same problem on my auger on my 8N until I realized that with the ORC on the PTO, the auger's drive shaft was too long. I could dig about 16 inches before the drive shaft closed together and wouldn't let the auger go down any further. Once I cut about 4 inches off of each side of the shaft (and the shield), I was able to dig all the way down. You can test this by taking the auger flight off and then try to lower the gearbox to the ground with the drive shaft hooked up. The gearbox should nearly touch the ground in the lowered position. If not, more than likely the drive shaft is putting it in a bind. Since its borrowed, I'd check with the owner before making any 'adjustments' to the shaft.

Good Luck and Be Careful,
Ken

I determined that the linkage nor the pto shaft are preventing the auger from working properly. Have you any other suggestions? The tip shows wear as well as the leading edges if I can somehow find a supplier I am going to try that route.

Jeff

The digger we used had an insert with a cutting edge bolted on the bottom of the auger. This would get dull, from hitting rocks, and it helped to take an electric angle grinder to touch it up. You didn't even need to take the insert off. We also had a method of adding weight, concrete blocks for example. Hope you've checked to make sure the gearbox with the auger removed will lower way down to the ground. I think it should if the PTO shaft isn't binding and the linkage OK.

My first suspicion would be that your 3-point linkage is binding somehow, not putting the weight of the digger on the auger.

Also, mine won't dig worth a hoot if grass and trash gets wrapped around the point.

Finally, if you haven't already tried in several spots, check to make sure the point isn't sitting on a small rock or something.
