I have a couple acre pasture which I keep my horse on. I have a fairly good stand of native grasses and augustine/bermuda mix. I plant rye in the spring and fall. I am wanting to improve the pasture by adding more bermuda and maybe some clover. I do not want to disturb the present grass too much. Would a light disking help me. I have also heard that it helps to incorporate fertilizer better. Need to know what one implement would be best for the job. Out

Gregg:

If you don't want to disturb the existing grass, you can core aerate and then overseed. This is best done in the fall. The plugs will break down on the surface, and the seed will fall into the cores. Gives a good, deep root system.

Just saw a special implement for doing pasture reconditioning awhile back.. in Western Cowman mag I think. It was like a 'star' disk that would penetrate 8" to 10" in the soil and loosen up the root zone without destroying the turf.

I've mentally misplaced the name and physically misplaced the magazine... I'll see if i can find out what the war dept. has done with it.

bbott, that sounds like an Aer-Way aerator.

Another option: check out the pasture renovator from Monroe Tufline.

Both good ways to go. But, for a couple acres, the disk will do fine if that's what you have.

I 'reconditioned' a 2 acre patch of grass by running a single disk over it & planted my leftover alfalfa on it. Came up some the first year, wasn't too impressed. Second year, wow, lots of alfalfa. Now I have to be carefull turning my cattle onto it. :) This was just to see what happens - wish I had disked it a little harder than I did.

Reconditioned my pasture last year by running my field cultivator over it very lightly - just peeled up 1" wide by 1" deep stripes about a foot apart. Fert & seeded it, then it got so dry this summer & ended up overgrazing it down to nothing. Sigh. Anyhow, kept the cattle off for a few weeks before the freezeup, and by golly looks like pretty good legumes coming in.

In both cases I had the grass all grazed down to nothing before seeding, and I seeded in spring. With rain any old disking/ field cultivating should give you a good result for a couple acres. Give it a year before you think it didn't do anything.
