Wagon Wobbles

I recently aquired a couple of old flat wagons. Both wobble side to side when pulled down the road at speeds over 10mph. I have noticed that the tongues are loose when moved side to side. Am I correct in surmising that the road wobble comes from old worn out tongue/steering assemblies? If this is the case can anyone point me in the direction of rebuild kits, or describe how to rebuild. If the steering/tongue is not the problem, what might it be?

Thanks

Wagons were built to be pulled by tractors. Tight steering or not, the worst thing you can do is figure on buckling three of them together and pulling them at road speed with your pickup. They'll whip like angry snakes. And the gendarmes will have your butt. Be careful.

put new bushings in tie rods, maybe have to plug weld holes in tongue and redrill and get mew bolts, check kingpins, also might need to make the bushings.

Check the large main pin where the tongue hooks to the X. If it is worn or broken, it allows the X to drift back and forth just enough on the end of the tongue to cause the steering to be effected and cause the wagon to snake back and forth. We had one do that this summer and a new pin made it track perfectly even at higher speeds,
say 30 mph, while transporting hay wagons to the barn behind a truck.

have a wagon that wobbled, the bushings in the spinles were loose, shimed the bushings, replacing the bushings would had been a better fix. might check it out, too.

I agree with the remarks about general play in the steering assemblies. Doesn't do any harm to check the tow-in of the front wheels. Increasing the tow-in just a bit might help. I know it does for tractors that tend to wobble at road speeds. Too much tow-in is rough on the tires, especially out on the road, so don't overdo. Half an inch is about as much as I like to use, a whole inch would need tire watching but might cut down on the wobble. I think it takes a pretty tight steering mechanism to handle over 20 mph.
