I was bushhogging an easy blueberryfield with a satoh s630d 4wd bull-25 hp.Just got a 4ft wood bushhog. A gear broke in the rear transmission with what I suspect was from maybe not meshing the 4wd in completely or something-The gear was a 30 tooth 4 or 5 inch slididng gear that engages the 4wd.All the other gears, pto included were fine-but since they are all related and since I bottomed the bushhog out a couple times and even hit a rock and tried mowing in different speeds-could I have broken that 4 wd gear from misuse of the pto bushhogging or was it a coincidence???

You deffinately need a slip clutch on your mower and a Stump Jumper plate if there is not one.
you might be mowing too close to the ground also.

I would say a coincidence. Unless you were in the mud I would stay out of 4wd mowing. I don't know anything about Satoh tractors though. Your mower if it is new should have a slip clutch or a shear pin to protect the drive train of the mower and as a result the tractor also. If you have an independent PTO the mower should have no effect on the transmission. I would say it was just some bad luck.

Just tell you what I've seen posted repeatedly on the 8N website.

One of the guys on the site is a retired Ford tractor mechanic, and he's said that bushhogging in 2d gear with a 2N/9N/8N causes transmission gear breakage. He's always said it is only 2d that has the problem because in that particular tractor 2d is the thinnest weakest gear and hogging is so stressful on the transmission...any other gear is/was ok. If it is true for the greatest tractor ever built, it may be true of any other. :-)

Good luck,
Tom

All i can say is, if you think those Fords are the greatest tractors ever built, then you still haven't owned or used any other tractor!! Robert

I think only the 8N has the problem with the weak 2nd gear. The 9N's and 2N's are o.k.

I am no Ford man but here is my take. From my understanding the PTO on a Ford (8N,9N,2N) is geared directly through the transmission. As a result a rotary mower (bush hog) will "push" the tractor even when you press the clutch to stop until the mower stops turning. I can see how this would damage the trans. A lot of farm implement dealers sell an overrunning clutch that fits directly on the PTO of the tractor. They are even recommended for this application. It will allow you to clutch the tractor to stop moving and allow the mower to coast to a stop without pushing the tractor.

I know if I am wrong on this I will hear about it but I think this is pretty close.
