This plow has been sitting out side for many years and is covered with rust. Can these moldboards be made to scour again or should it go to the junk pile. Thanks Dick

I've got a MM plow that has sat outside all it's life (about 50 years). It was a long fall when I finally got to using it again but it did shine up. Like the other guys said, dry sandy soils are the best to scour, and once they do scour, keep them clean! It saves you so much work. Just keep plugging way at it and scraping off the moldboards when they stick. By the way, what model is your MM plow? I'd like to see a picture if you have one available.

I bought an old IH plow that has always set outside, I found the best way to clean the moldboards is to use it. Everytime I pull mine in heavy clay, it cleans right up.

I've had luck with using a sandblaster followed by different sized grit sandpaper and a air sander. As long as the moldboards aren't pitted you should be okay. We have a 3 bottom moline plow that was laying on its side for years before we bought it. The one end of the front moldboard was pitted and we have had trouble getting that bottom to scour propery. Good Luck

If rest of plow is OK I wouldn't junk it. Clean moldboards best you can with a wire wheel or brush. Pour muratic acid on them and let sit a few minutes. This eats away and helps loosen rust. Don't get on you-it burns. Can be purchased at Tractor Supply or Farm and Fleet type stores. Then take plow out to field and use it. Dry coarse or sandy soil works best. Try to avoid wet, sticky clay soils. May have to stop at each end when you turn and scrape soil off moldboards until they shine up. How long this goes on depends on how bad they are rusted. They may never get super slick and shiny but they can be scoured good enough to play with. When you are finished be sure to keep them from rusting again. If you store inside can cover them with grease or used motor oil. If plow is exposed to weather use soft plow paint. Rain won't wash it off but will come off easily in the soil. Whatever you do don't junk it. We only have a limited supply of these old implements and need to preserve all we can. If you don't want it let someone have it who does. Good luck.
