I just bought a 1957 edition of the John Deere "Operation Care and Repair of Farm Machinery". It has a chapter on the Grassland Drill, which looks like an early no-till drill. I have a hay field which has too much alfalfa in it (at least that's what my horsey neighbors say - my sheep and mule don't seem to care) that I would like to add some brome or timothy grass to. Would this drill do it ? What model number should I look for at auctions ? I've never heard of this drill before - are they rare ? I have an FB with single disc openers, but I'm not sure if it would work for this. I have heard that you can frost-seed legumes, but not grass. The alfalfa is doing well enough that I do not want to plow up the field again.

The GL and GL-A are rare machines, and parts are probably not available. The FB may make enough of a slot to drop grass seed into, since you don't want to plant grass too deep anyway. Orchardgrass would probably take if spread on the field in early spring. It gets into my alfalfa on its own from seed blowing in on the wind from a neighbor's unmowed pasture.

Tim :

Thanks for the reply. Do you think that I need to use the FB for orchardgrass to work, or could I broadcast it ? I think that the drill will tear up the alfalfa.

I think broadcasting would work fine. Orchardgrass appeared across the 3-acre alfalfa field I was telling you about in 3 years, and I didn't do anything to put it there. Orchardgrass establishes easily compared to timothy and other grasses, and is a good partner with alfalfa because it will "leaf-out" more in second and third cut alfalfa than timothy will. Orchardgrass also tends to perform better in stressful conditions than timothy.
