What is the best McCormick/International baler

Hi folks,

I'm going farming, or maybe going crazy. In about 2 years I hope to be ready to go. Have a farmall 300 row crop and am going to need a baler. I am somewhat anal retentive about this sort of thing but I would really like to get a "red" baler. I have been asking around, and other than a few positives about the old McCormick 45's I haven't heard alot of good things. Can anyone give me some detailed advice?

Thanks in advance,

Thor

I'm a IH nut but one must be realistic if you are going to work a baler. The IH 45 -47's were not noted for having good knotters. I'm not a Massey fan but a 12 in good condition will cause you to get off the tractor a lot less. Even better a 124 if you can find a good one. Although designed for sisal it will run plastic just fine and you won't have to baby it.

Over the years I came across a couple people who had model 47's. They both took care of them and the machines looked like new. The one guy kept his in a garage. Both of the guys seemed well satisfied.

The thing I'd point out is that a third IH type went around work complaining that an IH dealer wanted to rape him $500 for a set of needles. I think it was for a Model 46 or 47 as well. So I guess my advice would be if you're gonna go that way do a little checking about how many parts you would need, are they still available and what will they cost.

We've used a model 47 over a good many years and for many thousands of bales. Had our share of problems but managed to work them out. Used it with a AC WD, JD 530 and IH 424. The 424 worked the best. If you weren't running too fast and tried to gobble a big lump the engine would stall out and save a shear pin. With the JD we used a lot of pins. Fellow once told me that the 47 tied a lot better knots than the 46 but I don't kmow for sure.

I am not real familiar with the 45's, but a 47 although newer might make a better antique baler to use behind your 300. It would be quite a bit lighter I think. One downside to an older baler is that they were most commonnly wire(expensive) or sisal twine(does not like moisture)unlike newer balers which use plastic twine. I have spent many hours pulling a 430,440, or 445 baler. They were good balers if they were set up right and still look pretty good behind an MD or SM. Good luck, Mike.

We have a McCormick 47t. It has caused us lots of headaches and even when it is operating good the bales aren't uniform and have a tendency to be lop-sided. My advice is to get a M.F. 12 or a n.h.
Parts are readily available for both.

I agree. There are no good IH balers. Both New Holland and JD will run circles around IH balers.
One problem is that the twines slip off too easily on IH-made bales so you need to handle them with "kid gloves". It has to do with the way the baler applies tension to the bale. Look closely at IH, New Holland and JD bale tension mechanisms and it becomes quite clear why IH doesn't make a good bale to retain the twine.
