We have a sickle bar mower and am interested in knowing where the serial no. would be found, so, we can find out the original price. We are told it was new around 1910. It is a horse drawn model, steel wheels, and it does work.

Dana, As a rule implements never had serial numbers assigned at least not until the last half of the century. They just built as many as they could sell and noted the changes in the parts books by date. If you can find a "repair catalog" that covers the Big 4 mower you might be able to determine the year built by comparing casting numbers on the mower to variations in the parts list. Back that early John Deere didn't supply individual parts catalogs to the dealers, rather the various factories provided a catalog of all their respective machines every 3 or 4 or 5 years. Good luck with your search. Bob

Thank you for your reply.
Also, my wife did not know I had already e-mailed so she did so again tonight. No need to reply.
Thanks again, Dana
