I have a NH 66 baler. It works great except I'm having a hard time getting it to feed through the pickup. I'm cutting fairly heavy hay with a 9' 488 Haybine and I can't go 10 feet without jamming up the pickup. Am I ever going to get it to feed, or is the baler just too small for the windrows? Thanks in advance for ANY ideas. I hate to get rid of the baler, it runs and ties great.

Your baler problems come from a broken spring hidden in the wadboard, the part no. is 28580, you need to pull the wadboard out to find this spring. This causes the plunger part that is supposed to fold under a wad to prevent breakage to stay folded all the time in the push mode of the wadboard and straighten out on the pull mode. Always on the push mode the chamber will be full so it cannot be seen.

Are you sure your wad board is working? If it loads up that fast I'd guess the two little shear screws are missing of the wad board chain.

Sounds like you're trying to shove too much hay through it. A 9' mower conditioner will get quite a windrow up if you have any kind of hay.

Those 66's were designed back with most mowers were 7' and the tractors were a little smaller.

Give 'er time to digest or think about a trading for a higher capacity NH or Deere if you don't want to wait on things, would be my advice.

A freind of mine and customer has a66 and we bale hay cut with a488 you just have to go slow in heavy crop some times you have to stop and let it feed at it's owen pace we also found that it workes better when pulled buy one of the older tractors, like his J/D (A) or my super h or my S/MTA just my two cents worthe of information, good luck !

Thanks guys, I'm probably going to have to look larger in a baler. I've tried baling behind my WD, slipping the hand clutch, my 180 A-C (ditto) and even my 300B Case Tripl-range in low-low-low, and it just won't feed. Years ago I saw where one guy drove lock washers onto the pickup auger flighting to feed slick wheat straw better. Do you think this would help? I baled all summer okay, and now it's giving me a fit, and I can't find any mechanical problem. Again thanks,
Karl.

New Holland went to those oscillating finger pickups in the later balers for good reason, hoss. There were lots of things I didn't care for in the JD 14T we had before we had the NH66, but at least their feed auger would "float". That helps what I believe your problem is.

I would guess if you just bit the bullet and swappped for a NH 268 or Deere 336 you could go out and kick butt.
