I have a 5200 4 wheel drive John Deere tractor and I am trying to decide on a backhoe attachment. I have narrowed the choice down to either a John Deere number 10A backhoe or a Woods 1050 backhoe. There is little information available in my area on either of these machines. If anyone has any input on either of these machines or another machine that would work on my tractor, I would appreciate the input.

I have a 10A back hoe on a JD 5310. I also have turff tires on the tractor. This gives me a ground clearance of only eight inches. The 10A is not a three point hookup, it uses a frame under the tractor that connects with two pins. It takes me about 30 min to hook up, but I'm getting better at it. The 10A is a very strong hoe, I have a 18 inch bucket and work it in mostly clay - no problems.

If I had it to do over, I would get a true 3-point hoe. I did look at several woods (don't remember the numbers of them) and found them well built. I got the 10A when I got the tractor because I got a "deal" on the combination (as well as a front end loader).

My biggest complaint is the low ground clearance.

I don't have input on the 1050 specifically, but I have a smaller Woods unit (650) that I've been very happy with. Ruggedly built, good feel and speed on the controls, no unusual problems. I've replaced a couple of hoses, but that's normal maintenance on a 'hoe.
