Hi,

I raised some questions on this list last week about a NH 846 baler that I was thinking about buying. Armed with the info that this good list provided, I went back today (Saturday, 10/7) and bought the baler for $1,200. It looked almost new. The paint was not even worn off of the pickup assembly, the belt idlers still had most of their original paint, and the chains looked and felt good. It even had the original manual neatly packaged in a zip-lock bag!

I may have to convert the twine tying mechanism to manual from hydraulic (I only have 1 remote) or cobble up some extra valves to retain the existing hydraulic setup.

Otherwise, it looks like it could start baling tomorrow. Now if I just had some hay to bale!

Thanks for all of the input.

Dave

I plan to pull the baler with a Ford 861. The one remote is specific to that era of Ford and they are fairly rare and pricey. I am not aware of any way to add a second remote and keep the tractor any where near original (which I want to do). I have located a source for a selector valve that I can mount on the baler (or tractor) and select "tail gate" or "twine tie" and then operate the remote on the tractor.

LB, I will keep your post in case this does not work out.

The selector valve is a workable idea, or you could run the flow from your existing remote valve & couplers through a two spool open center valve similar to a loader valve. By tying your existing valve in the operating position, you could then choose either tie or tailgate by moving the appropriate lever on your two spool valve. This would effectively give you 2 remote circuits, the only kicker is that to operate your 3pt hitch, the original remote valve would have to be returned to neutral. Another choice is to buy a 'power beyond' block to go between your hitch cover & remote valve. This would supply oil to an independent valve body AS WELL as your existing remote valve. Effectively giving you 3 remote valves, and the ability to return to stock appearance. This is the route I plan to take on my 841 to supply lift & power angle to a front snowplow, as well as offsetting a rear blade.

Dave, I used the selector valve on a John Deere 630 tractor and John Deere 510 round baler, and it worked just fine. You shouldn't have any problems. Just don't forget to switch back from tail gate to tie, or you'll kick out a bale with no twine.

Sounds like you made a great deal! Before you convert the tie mechanism, consider spending some of the money you 'saved' on the baler to upgrade your tractor to 2 remote circuits. Some are easier & cheaper than others. What make & model will you run the baler with? I may be able to suggest a reasonable alternative to bastardizing what sounds like a nice baler. I'm sure you will find other convenient uses for 2 remotes, once you have that capability.

Would you be interested in selling the hydraulic tie? Mine has the manual crank arm tie system. Maybe we could trade our setups? I'm in central wisconsin.
