May have really screwed things up now. Ran the baler the other day without running hay through it. Lot's of clang, clang, clanging but everything looked to be running right then one bigger clang. Shear bolt on fly wheel broke. Replace shear bolt and tried to run again. The only thing that turned was the slip clutch. This seemed to lug the engine pretty bad. Turned everything off to take look. Clutch had gotten pretty hot even though I only ran it for maybe 15 seconds. Any ideas what I did. Should I break down and call in JD service rep? Thanks in advance. Oh, by the way, the plunger is in the forward position.

Doug....I agree with what all these other guys have said...get the manual. From what you're describing, I wonder if you don't have the needles in the "home" position?? See if the plunger crankshaft isn't hitting the safety. If thats it, go back and pull the needle carriage all the way up and back, this should pull the safety back, and let the crankshaft rotate freely. I had an old 214W JD baler one time that made alot of noise when it ran, found out the the wear plates on the plunger were worn big time. I debated about buying some, decided it wasn't worth it, I simply pulled the plunger out, welded, and build them up, ground off a little, put back in and adjusted the plunger as best I could, and that old baler worked like a charm. Traded it for a 347 JD, and have always wished I'd have kept it, it was an oldie, but sure was a good one. I may be wrong but I think it was the one they made right after the "side winder" JD. Took 4 rolls of wire to make it work. Anyway, goodluck with your baler....by the way...what are you baling this time of year??

Sounds like you threw a chain off a sprocket somewhere.

Try turning it over by hand with the flywheel and see if you can detect what is stopping it from moving. Just running it without hay in it shouldn't hurt anything.

Don't panic! First thing go to your local J.D. deraler and order you a service manual and a parts manual. There is a very good section in the service manual that explains how to check the timing and how to correct the timing and also a section on trouble shooting. I have a 24t that I rebuilt and I couldn't have done it without the manuals. good luck.
