I,m toying with the idea of planting sorgham milo or German millet next year, about 3 acres, and need info on how to do it such as row spacing, depth of planting, type of planting equipment, fertilizer recommendations etc. It's for wildlife only so I don't care about harvesting. I'm wondering if my 2 row John Deere corn planter will work if I get the right plates and adjust the heads together. It'll require a lot of passes but our field is about 100 feet wide by 1200 feet long. Any info would be appreciated.

Dave:

Spring '99 I planted 2 food plots of 1-1/2 acres each in milo with some Japanese millet mixed in for good measure. I was working in brome grass, so Roundup first, waited 2 weeks, then just disked.

This past spring, same plots, but added 2 more (3 acres) of seed corn, from Pheasants forever (free) and outlined these w/about 8' of sorghum.

Man, that stuff came up great both times, no plowing, just disking. A final light disk to cover seed, and success. The best part was that I could just run over it all with a little 2-4D (cheap) to do away with the thistle that popped up. Plots grew thick enough to blank out the weeds once it got about 18" high.

My only learning was that less is better. Too thick, and it has some seed, but thin it down a little and the seed heads are much larger and fuller.

I couldn't have kept the pheasants and quail out if I wanted to. Don't be surprised if they don't hang there much early in the season. I checked last December, and hardly any seed was gone. First snow and cold snap, and they butchered the stuff w/in 2 weeks. That's what it was there for.

By the way, I love to hunt, but I only got around to doing so on my place once...oh well. Now I have 3 coveys of quail and 12-15 pheasants that stay on my 50 acres. Success....

Matt, sounds like a good job this year. How did you plant, with a broadcaster or what. Also, did you fertilize with anything, for instance, 12-12-12 or anything like that? Thanks for the info.

This year I planted a few A. for the wildlife . I disked several times in ground that was plowed last year then loaded milo , sorgum , corn and sunflowers in my broadcast seeder and sowed it heavy then disk it in lightly to cover the seed . It loooks great ,{ somthing for everyone} Its also thick enoght to choke out most of the weeds .

Hey Dave I'm in SeMo. I use a grain drill on the millet. The seed is very small and doesn't like being planted deep. Milo is more forgiving but still can't stand much over 1.5" deep (at least here). Depends on the wildlife you want to tend to. The millet is better for doves in my opinion. Seed rate on millet is @ 25#/A drilled (that may be a little high too) while the milo goes out @ 6-12 #/A depending on row spacing. I used to plant @ 8-10 #/A on 38" rows, use @ 10 #/A on 10 drill centers now. You have a lot more herbicide choices with milo, can use just about the same stuff on millet as you do on milo except Lasso or Dual will kill millet dead (you also have to use treated milo seed if you are gonna use Lasso or Dual on milo). I use atrazine with great success and you could use 2,4-D if don't have any cotton up close around you. (As with all chemicals always read the label). Hope this helps let me know if I can help any more. HB

Haybaler, thanks for the info. Sounds like sorgham milo is a lot like corn.---Looks a lot like it too when squeezing the stalks.
