What brand of implements?

Just bought our first tractor (MF-50). Can't find 3 pt implements in Consumer Reports. Is any one brand of these critters any better or, more important, worse than the others? The various dealers around here (Spokane, WA) sell Howse, Land Pride, King Kutter, Taylor-Way and Rankin (probably others too). The prices are pretty close for the same implement from each. I'm looking at getting a rotary mower and box scraper first, post hole digger and disc later. Any input will be appreciated.

Mark:

Like most things, you will get what you pay for. The implements sold at TSC and Northern Supply are inexpensive and good for light duty stuff. Alot depends on the tractor HP. I have some light duty stuff from TSC and a 40+ HP Case. I can easily bend the implements, so use care. Pay a little more now, save in the long run.

Mark,
As far as rotary cutters I would recommend a Bush Hog unit. I purchased a Razorback model and have been cutting for two years on a weekly basis with no trouble. I also have a Field Star auger (posthole digger),6 foot adjustable blade, and boom attachment as well as a Leinbach Line 16x16, 5-1/2 foot disc harrow. All were acquired at a resonable price and have yet to fail. Look around and don't be afraid to buy used. The disc harrow was a demo model I picked up for $200 off the sticker. Good luck.

I bought a used Bush Hog brand, model 205 about 20 years ago. Have had to do normal maintainance such as seals, universal joints in the driveline, and repair the deck, but the gearbox and frame is top quality. If I can run over a sapling, I can cut it. If you are going to mow pasture grass the lighter units might be ok but if you are going to do any serious "hoggin" get a heavy duty unit. I would prefer a used heavy unit over a new lightweight unit. Just check a used unit for oil in the gearbox. For that matter keep check on the gearbox lub no matter what you get. ray

Revision to the above. I took a closer look and the manufacturer is Farm Star and not Field Star.

I did a lot of investigating before I bought my box scraper. I ended up with a 72" LandPride Model 35. It's built tough with great welds and good paint. No complaints and I use it regularly.

Tyler, what exactly is a box scraper used for? Do they have a different purpose than a 3-point blade?

See my post below about the "grading with a 3pt snow blade" They are much more efficeint than a simple single 3pt blade at moving materials and leveling them out.

I would describe it as a field cultivator with a three sided box around it.

A box scraper is really a landscaping tool used to spread loose material around like topsoil or gravel. A truck dumps a load of gravel in a parking lot. The tractor pulls the box scraper to spread it out evenly...

While on vacation this summer, I witnessed a fancy box scraper in action at a campground in Canada. They used it to level off the gravel driveways. Eliminates potholes..

I also have a Land Pride box scraper. Mine's an 84" beast and well built. I bought mine used for $400. No complaints. My impression is that Howse box blades are cheaper, both in price and quality.

I never used one so take my comments with several grains of salt, but I am very, very unimpressed with the looks of new 3-point disks. I'd buy a 30-50 year old unit in good shape any day.

Landpride & Bush Hog seem to get good words on all the implement forums I visit.

Mark, I had a Howse brand brush hog. The unit didn't seem to be balanced well and when you sped the PTO rpm's up the unit seemed to wobble. I limped by with it until I could afford to purchase a better unit. I bought a John Deere #613. It seems to be a well built unit, and works well. To cover large pastures I also have a Bush Hog #3008 pull type cutter. It is built solid, and does a great job. I'd advise against buying a Howse brush hog. I've read good things about the King Kutter brand, but never owned one. I have a rear blade built by Ford. It is a heavy duty 7 foot model that angles, tilts, and offsets. Had it for years and it's still a good blade. I just purchased a new post hole digger recently. I went with the Bush Hog brand with a 12 inch double flight auger with the bear claw cutting edges. It's been EXTREMELY dry where we live and I recently had to dig four post holes. The Bush Hog auger did the job and went all the way to the gear box housing. I was very pleased. It is a very well built unit. That's my 2 cents worth. I'll pass the soap box to the next person.

KingKutter brand implements work well for me. We have their dirtscoop, rear blade, landscape rake, cultivator and boompole. All light-duty tasks, I agree but I have also had non-Kingcutter stuff that was not up to the task and are now scrap iron. FWIW

Sharp eyed forum readers! Yes, my old '48 had H-D decals til I got the new embossed or scripted fenders. Now she has lights and all the modern conveniences as well.
